Deathspell Omega
"The Long Defeat"
Norma Evangelium Diaboli (2022)

This is the review of Deathspell Omega's "The Long Defeat". You may or may not recognize carefully selected lines from different releases, not only from the lyrics of Deathspell Omega. You may recognize lines that are close to the original lines, yet still a bit reconstructed. You may think that there should be more about the actual music, but you ought to read between the li(n)es.

A deathlike silence settles.

1 When blood rains from heaven high

and from the pearly gates

I knew it would come

the storm of all storms

2 Is it all absurd to think that

everything will remain the same?

What is the present but a bridge

between a glorious past and a glorious future?

3 When they released their Cursed Fire

there was nothing alike

Nothing in the past

and nothing in the future

4 Still to this day it breathes

its trumpets of the Fall

Humanity has no meaning

other than no sense, utter nonsense

5 By divine law, we, the Cursed,

went into the eternal Fire

We were seeking love

but found only SILENCE

6 But yet there are music and books

and stories to tell

Such is the fabel that

Deathspell Omega have authored

7 "The Long Defeat" was music

in the beginning, in the past

There was rock, metal and horror

until there was no more music

8 There were voices inside

the shrine of mad laughter

They mocked me for thinking

that history would repeat itself

9 But I went to the through, Lord

I went bend and convulsed

I saw blood, Lord. It was glittering

You dispensed it and I drank it.

10 I saw your image

The gap of my eyes and mouth is void

I saw it in my dreams

as I saw Him, the Lord

11 It is truly Him

and he spoke to me

"You may think this is a dream

and you are dreaming yet awake"

12 I am hearing the melodies

when I wake up in the morning

I am hearing the melodies

when I go to bed in the evening

13 I want to listen to it again

because we have become One

I hear the drums and I am thinking

"have I heard such a sound of drums before?

14 The bass is so prominent

and the guitars are telling other stories

There are choirs that sing songs

of the apocalypse to come

15 And the vocals are more diverse

in this shrine of mad laughter"

And he, that poodle, said to me laughingly,

"listen to them, the children of the night

16 For they are telling you a history

that you have heard before

You ought to know that history

has a tendency to repeat itself"

17 Is this album "The Long Defeat",

the enantiodromia of the Deathspell Omega?

We do expect a continuation

of what was known to us

18 However, we stand corrected

and should have realized

That in this world of Art

we must expect the unexpected

19 But in this history of the collective

we now know as Deathspell Omega

The history does not repeat itself,

because something else is coming

20 Something new, untamed

like a cosmos within itself

It stares from the below

into our blind eyes

21 So I told Him, the Devil

that I have accepted the beginning

This new era has begun

and I see no end in my sight

22 And a deathlike silence settles

as I realize that the sound of "The Long Defeat"

is perfect and that every time I listen it is

Eadem, sed aliter
